perf list: Add debug support for outputing alias string

For debugging and testing it is useful to see the converted alias
string. Add support to perf stat/record and perf list to print the alias
conversion. The text string is saved in the alias structure.  For perf
stat/record it is folded into the normal -v. For perf list -v was taken,
so we use --debug.

The code for handling pmu aliases without specifying the PMU hardcoded

This patch extends it to work for all PMUs. We always duplicate the

perf pmu: Support per pmu json aliases

Add support for registering json aliases per PMU. Any alias with an unit
matching the prefix is registered to the PMU.  Uncore has multiple
instances of most units, so all these aliases get registered for each
individual PMU (this is important later to run the event on every

Handle the "ExtSel" field, which just extends the event mask with an
additional bit.

Handle the "Filter" field which adds parameters to the main event
to configure filtering.

Handle the "Unit" field which declares the unit the values should be

perf diff: Fix segfault on 'perf diff -o N' option

The -o/--order option is to select column number to sort a diff result.

It does the job by adding a hpp field at the beginning of the sort list.
But it should not be added to the output field list as it has no
callbacks required by a output field.

During the setup_sorting(), the perf_hpp__setup_output_field() appends
the given sort keys to the output field if it's not there already.

Originally it was checked by fmt->list being non-empty.  But commit
3f931f2c4274 ("perf hists: Make hpp setup function generic") changed it
to check the ->equal callback.

Anyways, we don't need to add the pseudo hpp field to the output field
list since it won't be used for output.  So just skip fields if they

Ard Biesheuvel [Wed, 1 Feb 2017 17:45:02 +0000 (17:45 +0000)]
efi/fdt: Avoid FDT manipulation after ExitBootServices()

Some AArch64 UEFI implementations disable the MMU in ExitBootServices(),
after which unaligned accesses to RAM are no longer supported.

Commit:

abfb7b686a3e ("efi/libstub/arm*: Pass latest memory map to the kernel")

fixed an issue in the memory map handling of the stub FDT code, but
inadvertently created an issue with such firmware, by moving some
of the FDT manipulation to after the invocation of ExitBootServices().

Given that the stub's libfdt implementation uses the ordinary, accelerated
string functions, which rely on hardware handling of unaligned accesses,
manipulating the FDT with the MMU off may result in alignment faults.

So fix the situation by moving the update_fdt_memmap() call into the
callback function invoked by efi_exit_boot_services() right before it
calls the ExitBootServices() UEFI service (which is arguably a better
place for it anyway)

Note that disabling the MMU in ExitBootServices() is not compliant with
the UEFI spec, and carries great risk due to the fact that switching from
cached to uncached memory accesses halfway through compiler generated code
(i.e., involving a stack) can never be done in a way that is architecturally
safe.

In the current version, the matchall internal state is split into two

sense, as matchall instance supports only one filter, and there is no

Ivan Vecera [Tue, 31 Jan 2017 19:01:31 +0000 (20:01 +0100)]
be2net: fix initial MAC setting

Recent commit 34393529163a ("be2net: fix MAC addr setting on privileged
BE3 VFs") allows privileged BE3 VFs to set its MAC address during
initialization. Although the initial MAC for such VFs is already
programmed by parent PF the subsequent setting performed by VF is OK,
but in certain cases (after fresh boot) this command in VF can fail.

The MAC should be initialized only when:
1) no MAC is programmed (always except BE3 VFs during first init)
2) programmed MAC is different from requested (e.g. MAC is set when
interface is down). In this case the initial MAC programmed by PF
   needs to be deleted.

The adapter->dev_mac contains MAC address currently programmed in HW so
it should be zeroed when the MAC is deleted from HW and should not be
filled when MAC is set when interface is down in be_mac_addr_set() as
no programming is performed in this case.

Example of failure without the fix (immediately after fresh boot):

# ip link set eth0 up  <- eth0 is BE3 PF
be2net 0000:01:00.0 eth0: Link is Up

# echo 1 > /sys/class/net/eth0/device/sriov_numvfs  <- Create 1 VF
...
be2net 0000:01:04.0: Emulex OneConnect(be3): VF  port 0

# ip link set eth8 up  <- eth8 is created privileged VF
be2net 0000:01:04.0: opcode 59-1 failed:status 1-76
RTNETLINK answers: Input/output error

# echo 0 > /sys/class/net/eth0/device/sriov_numvfs  <- Delete VF
iommu: Removing device 0000:01:04.0 from group 33
...

# echo 1 > /sys/class/net/eth0/device/sriov_numvfs  <- Create it again
iommu: Removing device 0000:01:04.0 from group 33
...

# ip link set eth8 up
be2net 0000:01:04.0 eth8: Link is Up

Initialization is now OK.

perf/x86/intel/uncore: Clean up hotplug conversion fallout

The recent conversion to the hotplug state machine kept two mechanisms from
the original code:

 1) The first_init logic which adds the number of online CPUs in a package
to the refcount. That's wrong because the callbacks are executed for
    all online CPUs.

Remove it so the refcounting is correct.

 2) The on_each_cpu() call to undo box->init() in the error handling
path. That's bogus because when the prepare callback fails no box has
    been initialized yet.

perf/x86/intel/rapl: Make package handling more robust

The package management code in RAPL relies on package mapping being

A possible fix would be to reintroduce the mess which allocates a package

Thomas Gleixner [Tue, 31 Jan 2017 08:37:34 +0000 (09:37 +0100)]
x86/mce: Make timer handling more robust

Erik reported that on a preproduction hardware a CMCI storm triggers the
BUG_ON in add_timer_on(). The reason is that the per CPU MCE timer is
started by the CMCI logic before the MCE CPU hotplug callback starts the
timer with add_timer_on(). So the timer is already queued which triggers
the BUG.

Using add_timer_on() is pretty pointless in this code because the timer is
strictlty per CPU, initialized as pinned and all operations which arm the
timer happen on the CPU to which the timer belongs.

Simplify the whole machinery by using mod_timer() instead of add_timer_on()
which avoids the problem because mod_timer() can handle already queued
timers. Use __start_timer() everywhere so the earliest armed expiry time is
preserved.

7 years agofscache: Fix dead object requeue
David Howells [Tue, 31 Jan 2017 09:45:28 +0000 (09:45 +0000)]
fscache: Fix dead object requeue

Under some circumstances, an fscache object can become queued such that it
fscache_object_work_func() can be called once the object is in the
OBJECT_DEAD state.  This results in the kernel oopsing when it tries to
invoke the handler for the state (which is hard coded to 0x2).

The way this comes about is something like the following:

 (1) The object dispatcher is processing a work state for an object.  This
     is done in workqueue context.

 (2) An out-of-band event comes in that isn't masked, causing the object to
     be queued, say EV_KILL.

 (3) The object dispatcher finishes processing the current work state on
that object and then sees there's another event to process, so,
without returning to the workqueue core, it processes that event too.
It then follows the chain of events that initiates until we reach
OBJECT_DEAD without going through a wait state (such as
     WAIT_FOR_CLEARANCE).

At this point, object->events may be 0, object->event_mask will be 0
     and oob_event_mask will be 0.

 (4) The object dispatcher returns to the workqueue processor, and in due
course, this sees that the object's work item is still queued and
     invokes it again.

 (5) The current state is a work state (OBJECT_DEAD), so the dispatcher
jumps to it - resulting in an OOPS.

When I'm seeing this, the work state in (1) appears to have been either
LOOK_UP_OBJECT or CREATE_OBJECT (object->oob_table is
fscache_osm_lookup_oob).

The window for (2) is very small:

 (A) object->event_mask is cleared whilst the event dispatch process is
underway - though there's no memory barrier to force this to the top
     of the function.

The window, therefore is from the time the object was selected by the
workqueue processor and made requeueable to the time the mask was
     cleared.

 (B) fscache_raise_event() will only queue the object if it manages to set
the event bit and the corresponding event_mask bit was set.

The enqueuement is then deferred slightly whilst we get a ref on the
object and get the per-CPU variable for workqueue congestion.  This
slight deferral slightly increases the probability by allowing extra
time for the workqueue to make the item requeueable.

Handle this by giving the dead state a processor function and checking the
for the dead state address rather than seeing if the processor function is
address 0x2.  The dead state processor function can then set a flag to
indicate that it's occurred and give a warning if it occurs more than once
per object.

If this race occurs, an oops similar to the following is seen (note the RIP
value):

fscache: Clear outstanding writes when disabling a cookie

fscache_disable_cookie() needs to clear the outstanding writes on the
cookie it's disabling because they cannot be completed after.

Without this, fscache_nfs_open_file() gets stuck because it disables the

Dimitris Michailidis [Mon, 30 Jan 2017 22:09:42 +0000 (14:09 -0800)]
ipv6: fix flow labels when the traffic class is non-0

ip6_make_flowlabel() determines the flow label for IPv6 packets. It's
supposed to be passed a flow label, which it returns as is if non-0 and
in some other cases, otherwise it calculates a new value.

The problem is callers often pass a flowi6.flowlabel, which may also
contain traffic class bits. If the traffic class is non-0
ip6_make_flowlabel() mistakes the non-0 it gets as a flow label and
returns the whole thing. Thus it can return a 'flow label' longer than
20b and the low 20b of that is typically 0 resulting in packets with 0
label. Moreover, different packets of a flow may be labeled differently.
For a TCP flow with ECN non-payload and payload packets get different
labels as exemplified by this pair of consecutive packets:

Christoph Hellwig [Tue, 24 Jan 2017 08:22:41 +0000 (09:22 +0100)]
nfsd: special case truncates some more

Both the NFS protocols and the Linux VFS use a setattr operation with a
bitmap of attributs to set to set various file attributes including the
file size and the uid/gid.

The Linux syscalls never mixes size updates with unrelated updates like
the uid/gid, and some file systems like XFS and GFS2 rely on the fact
that truncates might not update random other attributes, and many other
file systems handle the case but do not update the different attributes
in the same transaction.  NFSD on the other hand passes the attributes
it gets on the wire more or less directly through to the VFS, leading to
updates the file systems don't expect.  XFS at least has an assert on
the allowed attributes, which caught an unusual NFS client setting the
size and group at the same time.

To handle this issue properly this switches nfsd to call vfs_truncate
for size changes, and then handle all other attributes through
notify_change.  As a side effect this also means less boilerplace code
around the size change as we can now reuse the VFS code.

tracing: Fix hwlat kthread migration

The hwlat tracer creates a kernel thread at start of the tracer. It is
pinned to a single CPU and will move to the next CPU after each period of
running. If the user modifies the migration thread's affinity, it will not
change after that happens.

The original code created the thread at the first instance it was called,
but later was changed to destroy the thread after the tracer was finished,
and would not be created until the next instance of the tracer was
established. The code that initialized the affinity was only called on the
initial instantiation of the tracer. After that, it was not initialized, and
the previous affinity did not match the current newly created one, making

====================
sparc64: Recover from userspace non-resumable PIO & MEM errors

A non-resumable error from userspace is able to cause a kernel panic or trap
loop due to the setup and handling of the queued traps once in the kernel.
This patch series addresses both of these issues.

The queues are fixed by simply zeroing the memory before use.

PIO errors from userspace will result in a SIGBUS being sent to the user
process.

The MEM errors form userspace will result in a SIGKILL and also cause the
offending pages to be claimed so they are no longer used in future tasks.
SIGKILL is used to ensure that the process does not try to coredump and result
in an attempt to read the memory again from within kernel space.  Although
there is a HV call to scrub the memory (mem_scrub), there is no easy way to
guarantee that the real memory address(es) are not used by other tasks.
Clearing the error with mem_scrub would zero the memory and cause the other
processes to proceed with bad data.

The handling of other non-resumable errors remain unchanged and will cause a
panic.

net/mlx4_core: Avoid command timeouts during VF driver device shutdown

Some Hypervisors detach VFs from VMs by instantly causing an FLR event
to be generated for a VF.

In the mlx4 case, this will cause that VF's comm channel to be disabled
before the VM has an opportunity to invoke the VF device's "shutdown"
method.

The result is that the VF driver on the VM will experience a command
timeout during the shutdown process when the Hypervisor does not deliver
a command-completion event to the VM.

To avoid FW command timeouts on the VM when the driver's shutdown method
is invoked, we detect the absence of the VF's comm channel at the very
start of the shutdown process. If the comm-channel has already been
disabled, we cause all FW commands during the device shutdown process to
immediately return success (and thus avoid all command timeouts).

This patch renames L2 counters to LLC counters. In AMD Family17h
processors, L3 cache counter is supported.

Since older families have at most L2 counters, last level cache (LLC)
indicates L2/L3 based on the family.

perf/core: Try parent PMU first when initializing a child event

perf has additional overhead when monitoring the task which
frequently generates child tasks.

perf_init_event() is one of the hotspots for the additional overhead:

Currently, to get the PMU, it tries to search the type in pmu_idr at
first. But it is not always successful, especially for the widely used
PERF_TYPE_HARDWARE and PERF_TYPE_HW_CACHE events. So it has to go to the
slow path which go through the whole PMUs list.

It will be a big performance issue, if the PMUs list is long (e.g. server
with many uncore boxes) and the task frequently generates child tasks.

The child event inherits its parent event. So the child event should
try its parent PMU first.

Here is some data from the overhead test on Broadwell server:

perf/core: Optimize event rescheduling on active contexts

When new events are added to an active context, we go and reschedule
all cpu groups and all task groups in order to preserve the priority
(cpu pinned, task pinned, cpu flexible, task flexible), but in

David Carrillo-Cisneros [Wed, 18 Jan 2017 19:24:54 +0000 (11:24 -0800)]
perf/core: Remove perf_cpu_context::unique_pmu

cpuctx->unique_pmu was originally introduced as a way to identify cpuctxs
with shared pmus in order to avoid visiting the same cpuctx more than once
in a for_each_pmu loop.

cpuctx->unique_pmu == cpuctx->pmu in non-software task contexts since they
have only one pmu per cpuctx. Since perf_pmu_sched_task() is only called in
hw contexts, this patch replaces cpuctx->unique_pmu by cpuctx->pmu in it.

The change above, together with the previous patch in this series, removed
the remaining uses of cpuctx->unique_pmu, so we remove it altogether.

David Carrillo-Cisneros [Wed, 18 Jan 2017 19:24:53 +0000 (11:24 -0800)]
perf/core: Make cgroup switch visit only cpuctxs with cgroup events

This patch follows from a conversation in CQM/CMT's last series about
speeding up the context switch for cgroup events:

  https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/9478617/

This is a low-hanging fruit optimization. It replaces the iteration over
the "pmus" list in cgroup switch by an iteration over a new list that
contains only cpuctxs with at least one cgroup event.

This is necessary because the number of PMUs have increased over the years
e.g modern x86 server systems have well above 50 PMUs.

The iteration over the full PMU list is unneccessary and can be costly in
heavy cache contention scenarios.

Below are some instrumentation measurements with 10, 50 and 90 percentiles
of the total cost of context switch before and after this optimization for
a simple array read/write microbenchark.

where:

  2 event types = cycles,intel_cqm/llc_occupancy/

   Median Speedup is (50%ile Before - 50%ile After) /  50%ile Before

Unsurprisingly, the benefits of this optimization decrease with the number
of cpuctxs with a cgroup events, yet, is never detrimental.

perf/core: Fix use-after-free bug

Dmitry reported a KASAN use-after-free on event->group_leader.

It turns out there's a hole in perf_remove_from_context() due to
event_function_call() not calling its function when the task
associated with the event is already dead.

In this case the event will have been detached from the task, but the
grouping will have been retained, such that group operations might
still work properly while there are live child events etc.

This does however mean that we can miss a perf_group_detach() call
when the group decomposes, this in turn can then lead to
use-after-free.

Fix it by explicitly doing the group detach if its still required.

pinctrl: intel: merrifield: Add missed check in mrfld_config_set()

Not every pin can be configured. Add missed check to prevent access
violation.

pinctrl: sunxi: Don't enforce bias disable (for now)

Commit 07fe64ba213f ("pinctrl: sunxi: Handle bias disable") actually
enforced enforced the disabling of the pull up/down resistors instead of
ignoring it like it was done before.

This was part of a wider rework to switch to the generic pinconf bindings,
and was meant to be merged together with DT patches that were switching to
it, and removing what was considered default values by both the binding and
the boards. This included no bias on a pin.

However, those DT patches were delayed to 4.11, which would be fine only
for a significant number boards having the bias setup wrong, which in turns
break the MMC on those boards (and possibly other devices too).

In order to avoid conflicts as much as possible, bring back the old
behaviour for 4.10, and we'll revert that commit once all the DT bits will
have landed.

net: adaptec: starfire: add checks for dma mapping errors

init_ring(), refill_rx_ring() and start_tx() don't check
if mapping dma memory succeed.
The patch adds the checks and failure handling.
