e1000e: update Tx Unit hang detection message

The Tx unit hang detection code in e1000e detects other hangs caused by
hardware components (e.g. Rx, DMA units), but it is not possible to detect
exactly which component is hung so it has always assumed a Tx unit hang.
When dumping a message to the system log because of a hang, this patch adds
more data to help narrow the cause of the issue and makes the message
non-Tx-specific.  Because this new code reads PHY registers which can

The driver was only updating MII stats when an LSC up was detected and
the interface had not already been reported up to netdev. This meant
MII stats returned in response to an SIOCGMIIREG ioctl would always

Linus Torvalds [Wed, 18 Nov 2009 21:31:52 +0000 (22:31 +0100)]
strcmp: fix overflow and possibly signedness error

Doing the strcmp return value as

signed char __res = *cs - *ct;

is wrong for two reasons.  The subtraction can overflow because __res
doesn't use a type big enough.  Moreover the compared bytes should be
interpreted as unsigned char as specified by POSIX.

The same problem is fixed in strncmp.

Thanks guys, here an updated version then, before linkwatch surgery ?

In this version, I force the event to be sent synchronously.

[PATCH net-next-2.6] linkwatch: linkwatch_forget_dev() to speedup device dismantle

real 0m1.022s
user 0m0.000s
sys 0m0.000s

One problem of current schem in vlan dismantle phase is the
holding of device done by following chain :

vlan_dev_stop() ->
netif_carrier_off(dev) ->
linkwatch_fire_event(dev) ->
dev_hold() ...

And __linkwatch_run_queue() runs up to one second later...

A generic fix to this problem is to add a linkwatch_forget_dev() method
to unlink the device from the list of watched devices.

dev->link_watch_next becomes dev->link_watch_list (and use a bit more memory),
to be able to unlink device in O(1).

After patch :

[CPUFREQ] Fix stale cpufreq_cpu_governor pointer

Dave,

Attached is an update of my patch against the cpufreq fixes branch.

Before applying the patch I compiled and booted the tree to see if the panic
was still there -- to my surprise it was not.  This is because of the conversion
of cpufreq_cpu_governor to a char[].

While the panic is kaput, the problem of stale data continues and my patch is
still valid.  It is possible to end up with the wrong governor after hotplug
events because CPUFREQ_DEFAULT_GOVERNOR is statically linked to a default,
while the cpu siblings may have had a different governor assigned by a user.

ie) the patch is still needed in order to keep the governors assigned
properly when hotplugging devices

[CPUFREQ] Resolve time unit thinko in ondemand/conservative govs

ondemand and conservative governors are messing up time units in the
code path where NO_HZ is not enabled and ignore_nice is set. The walltime
idletime stored is in jiffies and nice time calculation is happening in
microseconds.

The problem was reported and diagnosed by Alexander here.

The patch below fixes this thinko.
