When configuring event perf checked a wrong condition that user

However, Andi's downloadable event patch changes the situation so it
cannot change the value for those events. Fix it by allowing override

perf tools: Add dcacheline sort
In perf's 'mem-mode', one can get access to a whole bunch of details specific to a
particular sample instruction. A bunch of those details relate to the data
address.
One interesting thing you can do with data addresses is to convert them into a unique
cacheline they belong too. Organizing these data cachelines into similar groups and sorting
them can reveal cache contention.
This patch creates an alogorithm based on various sample details that can help group
entries together into data cachelines and allows 'perf report' to sort on it.
The algorithm relies on having proper mmap2 support in the kernel to help determine
if the memory map the data address belongs to is private to a pid or globally shared.
The alogortithm is as follows:
o group cpumodes together
o group entries with discovered maps together
o sort on major, minor, inode and inode generation numbers
o if userspace anon, then sort on pid
o sort on cachelines based on data addresses
The 'dcacheline' sort option in 'perf report' only works in 'mem-mode'.
Sample output:
#
# Samples: 206 of event 'cpu/mem-loads/pp'
# Total weight : 2534
# Sort order : dcacheline,pid
#
# Overhead Samples Data Cacheline Command: Pid

the __get_bitmask() call and be able to convert the data that's in
the ring buffer into a nice bitmask format. The output is similar to
what the kernel uses to print bitmasks, with a comma separator every
4 bytes (8 characters).
This allows for cpumasks to also be saved efficiently.
The first user is the thermal:thermal_power_limit event which has the
following output:
thermal_power_limit: cpus=
0000000f freq=
1900000 cdev_state=0 power=5252

tools lib traceevent: Add options to plugins
The traceevent plugins allows developers to have their events print out
information that is more advanced than what can be achieved by the
trace event format files.
As these plugins are used on the userspace side of the tracing tools, it
is only logical that the tools should be able to produce different types
of output for the events. The types of events still need to be defined by
the plugins thus we need a way to pass information from the tool to the
plugin to specify what type of information to be shown.
Not only does the information need to be passed by the tool to plugin, but
the plugin also requires a way to notify the tool of what options it can
provide.
This builds the plugin option infrastructure that is taken from trace-cmd
that is used to allow plugins to produce different output based on the
options specified by the tool.

perf: Differentiate exec() and non-exec() comm events
perf tools like 'perf report' can aggregate samples by comm strings,
which generally works. However, there are other potential use-cases.
For example, to pair up 'calls' with 'returns' accurately (from branch
events like Intel BTS) it is necessary to identify whether the process
has exec'd. Although a comm event is generated when an 'exec' happens
it is also generated whenever the comm string is changed on a whim
(e.g. by prctl PR_SET_NAME). This patch adds a flag to the comm event
to differentiate one case from the other.
In order to determine whether the kernel supports the new flag, a
selection bit named 'exec' is added to struct perf_event_attr. The
bit does nothing but will cause perf_event_open() to fail if the bit
is set on kernels that do not have it defined.

copy_insn() fails with -EIO if ->readpage == NULL, but this error
is not propagated unless uprobe_register() path finds ->mm which
already mmaps this file. In this case (say) "perf record" does not
actually install the probe, but the user can't know about this.
Move this check into uprobe_register() so that this problem can be
detected earlier and reported to user.
Note: this is still not perfect,
- copy_insn() and arch_uprobe_analyze_insn() should be called
by uprobe_register() but this is not simple, we need vm_file
for read_mapping_page() (although perhaps we can pass NULL),
and we need ->mm for is_64bit_mm() (although this logic is
broken anyway).
- uprobe_register() should be called by create_trace_uprobe(),
not by probe_event_enable(), so that an error can be detected
at "perf probe -x" time. This also needs more changes in the
core uprobe code, uprobe register/unregister interface was
poorly designed from the very beginning.

perf tools: Fix 'make help' message error
Currently 'make help' message has such hint:
use "make prefix=<path> <install target>" to install to a particular
path like make prefix=/usr/local install install-doc
But this is misleading, when I specify "prefix=/usr/local", it has got no
respect at all.
This is because that, "DESTDIR" is considered first. In this case, "DESTDIR"
has an empty value, so "prefix" is honored. However, "prefix" is unconditionally
assigned to $HOME, regardless of what it is set to from command line. So our
"prefix" setting got no respect and the actual destination falls back to $HOME.
This patch fixes this issue and corrects the help message.

uprobes: Shift ->readpage check from __copy_insn() to uprobe_register()
copy_insn() fails with -EIO if ->readpage == NULL, but this error
is not propagated unless uprobe_register() path finds ->mm which
already mmaps this file. In this case (say) "perf record" does not
actually install the probe, but the user can't know about this.
Move this check into uprobe_register() so that this problem can be
detected earlier and reported to user.
Note: this is still not perfect,
- copy_insn() and arch_uprobe_analyze_insn() should be called
by uprobe_register() but this is not simple, we need vm_file
for read_mapping_page() (although perhaps we can pass NULL),
and we need ->mm for is_64bit_mm() (although this logic is
broken anyway).
- uprobe_register() should be called by create_trace_uprobe(),
not by probe_event_enable(), so that an error can be detected
at "perf probe -x" time. This also needs more changes in the
core uprobe code, uprobe register/unregister interface was
poorly designed from the very beginning.

drm/crtc-helper: explicit DPMS on after modeset
which was merged long ago and actually part of 3.14.
Digging deeper I've noticed (again) that the call to
drm_helper_resume_force_mode in the radeon resume handlers was a no-op
previously because everything gets shut down on suspend. radeon does
this with explicit calls to drm_helper_connector_dpms with DPMS_OFF.
But with 177c we now force the dpms state to ON, so suddenly
resume_force_mode actually forced the crtcs back on.
This is the intention of the change after all, the problem is that
radeon resumes the fbdev console layer _before_ restoring the display,
through calling fb_set_suspend. And fbcon does an immediate ->set_par,
which in turn causes the same forced mode restore to happen.
Two concurrent modeset operations didn't lead to happiness. Fix this
by delaying the fbcon resume until the end of the readeon resum
functions.

x86_64: expand kernel stack to 16K
While I play inhouse patches with much memory pressure on qemu-kvm,
3.14 kernel was randomly crashed. The reason was kernel stack overflow.
When I investigated the problem, the callstack was a little bit deeper
by involve with reclaim functions but not direct reclaim path.
I tried to diet stack size of some functions related with alloc/reclaim
so did a hundred of byte but overflow was't disappeard so that I encounter
overflow by another deeper callstack on reclaim/allocator path.
Of course, we might sweep every sites we have found for reducing
stack usage but I'm not sure how long it saves the world(surely,
lots of developer start to add nice features which will use stack
agains) and if we consider another more complex feature in I/O layer
and/or reclaim path, it might be better to increase stack size(
meanwhile, stack usage on 64bit machine was doubled compared to 32bit
while it have sticked to 8K. Hmm, it's not a fair to me and arm64
already expaned to 16K. )
So, my stupid idea is just let's expand stack size and keep an eye
toward stack consumption on each kernel functions via stacktrace of ftrace.
For example, we can have a bar like that each funcion shouldn't exceed 200K
and emit the warning when some function consumes more in runtime.
Of course, it could make false positive but at least, it could make a
chance to think over it.
I guess this topic was discussed several time so there might be
strong reason not to increase kernel stack size on x86_64, for me not

[ Note: the problem is exacerbated by certain gcc versions that seem to
generate much bigger stack frames due to apparently bad coalescing of
temporaries and generating too many spills. Rusty saw gcc-4.6.4 using
35% more stack on the virtio path than 4.8.2 does, for example.
Minchan not only uses such a bad gcc version (4.6.3 in his case), but
some of the stack use is due to debugging (CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC is
what causes that kernel_map_pages() frame, for example). But we're
clearly getting too close.
The VM code also seems to have excessive stack frames partly for the
same compiler reason, triggered by excessive inlining and lots of
function arguments.
We need to improve on our stack use, but in the meantime let's do this
simple stack increase too. Unlike most earlier reports, there is
nothing simple that stands out as being really horribly wrong here,
apart from the fact that the stack frames are just bigger than they
should need to be. - Linus ]
